Simple Sentence, Compound Sentence, and Complex Sentence

Seperti yang kita ketahui, sentence (kalimat) adalah suatu konstruksi gramatikal yang mengungkapkan suatu pikiran yang utuh. Sentence dapat terbentuk dari satu clause atau lebih, dimana setidaknya harus ada independent clause.

 

Sentences memiliki beberapa jenis yaitu Simple Sentence, Compound Sentence, dan Complex Sentence. Apa saja sih perbedaanya?

 

SIMPLE SENTENCE

Simple Sentence merupakan kalimat sederhana yang hanya terdiri dari satu klausa yaitu hanya menampung subjek dan predikat.

Rumus Simple Sentence:

Subject + Verb + Complement/Object

Contoh:

Harry looks handsome in his hat

I bought a new car

Tom eats an apple

 

COMPOUND SENTENCE

Compound Sentence merupakan kalimat yang tediri dari dua kalimat sederhana (simple sentence) yang dihubungkan oleh coordinate conjuction, conjunctive adverb, atau titk koma.

Coordinate conjuction terdiri dari kata and, yet, so, or, but, for, dll. Sementara conjunctive adverb terdiri dari kata however, therefore, dan hence.

Rumus Compound Sentence:

Subject + Verb + Object/Complement + Coordinate Conjuction/Conjunctive Adverb + Subject + Verb + Object/Complement

Atau lebih simplenya,

Simple Sentence + Coordinate Conjuction/Conjunctive Adverb + Simple Sentence

Contoh:

I am tired but I am excited

My little brother likes cakes but my sister prefers chips

She did not go to the mall today for she was scared of coronavirus

 

COMPLEX SENTENCE

Complex Sentence merupakan kalimat yang terdiri dari dua klausa, yakni main/independent clause (induk kalimat) dan dependent clause (anak kalimat) yang dihubungkan oleh subordinate conjunction.

Subordinate conjunction terdiri dari before, after, when, while, in order to, although, even though, whenever, wherever, even if, as if, dll.

Rumus Complex Sentence:

Bentuk 1 = Independent Clause + Conjuction + Dependent Clause

Bentuk 2 = Conjuction + Dependent Clause + Independent Clause

Contoh:

He is excited although he is tired (B1)

Although he is tired, he is excited (B2)

You must acknowledge that what you did was wrong before you apologize (B1)

Before you apologize, you must acknowledge that what you did was wrong (B2)
